A Team Needs Their Leader To Be Predictable In This Specific Way
/Your team can't always know what will happen. And they don't need to.
What most teams actually need is a leader whose way of responding is predictable.
Not predictable in the sense of boring, rigid, or always doing things the same way. Predictable in the sense that team members know they can expect an emotionally regulated, fair, open-minded response, even when difficult news is shared, a mistake has been made, or disagreements arise.
They know they can bring a problem without being punished for it.
They know difficult feedback will be given with a focus on growth rather than a put-down.
They know disagreement won’t automatically be interpreted as disloyalty.
They know that even when their leader is surprised, under pressure, or frustrated, they won't suddenly be dealing with a completely different person.
That kind of predictability creates something certainty alone can't: psychological safety.
And this quality often gives leaders more freedom to be flexible, spontaneous, and actually fully human.
Because when your team can rely on the way you'll respond, they know that they won’t have to manage your reactivity. They can trust you to manage it yourself.
Do your team members know what they can expect from you when things get difficult?
